The Final Destination Wins Horror Movie Box Office Battle
By Adam Bryant
The Final Destination scared up $28.3 million to take the top spot at the weekend box office, beating out fellow horror genre opening Halloween II.
Rob Zombie's second installment in his reimagining of the classic horror franchise pulled in $17.4 million for third place, finishing behind last week's champ, Inglourious Basterds ($20 million), according to Variety.
Perhaps noting the success of Destination, which was presented in 3-D, Halloween producer Bob Weinstein told the Los Angeles Times that the next film in the series will also be 3-D.
Ang Lee's Taking Woodstock was the weekend's other new opener, and underperformed, pulling in only $3.7 million. Rounding out the weekend's top 5 were District 9 ($10.7 million) and G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra ($8 million).
