Avatar is 'King of the World' after beating out Mel Gibson's new movie to take the top spot for the seventh week running.The hit 3D movie, directed by James Cameron (pictured), took in another $30million at the US box office, making its North America gross a staggering $594.5million since it opened.
The movie is now the highest world-wide grossing movie of all time, beating Cameron's previous blockbuster, Titanic.
Hollywood.com's Paul Dergarabedian, revealed: 'As if beating Titanic's worldwide box office of $1.8billion wasn’t enough, Avatar does the formerly unthinkable and surpasses the $2billion mark in global box office.
'This film is also on the verge of becoming the highest-grossing film domestically of all time and is just $6million away from surpassing Titantic and its $600.8million in North American total.''
Edge Of Darkness, a crime drama starring Mel Gibson, debuted in the number two slot with $17.1million in ticket receipts.
The latest Disney romantic comedy When In Rome, starring Josh Duhamel, took the number three spot with $12.1million.
