The hit 3D movie, directed by James Cameron (pictured), took in another $30million at the US box office, making its North America gross a staggering $594.5million since it opened.
The movie is now the highest world-wide grossing movie of all time, beating Cameron's previous blockbuster, Titanic.
Hollywood.com's Paul Dergarabedian, revealed: 'As if beating Titanic's worldwide box office of $1.8billion wasn’t enough, Avatar does the formerly unthinkable and surpasses the $2billion mark in global box office.
'This film is also on the verge of becoming the highest-grossing film domestically of all time and is just $6million away from surpassing Titantic and its $600.8million in North American total.''
Edge Of Darkness, a crime drama starring Mel Gibson, debuted in the number two slot with $17.1million in ticket receipts.
The latest Disney romantic comedy When In Rome, starring Josh Duhamel, took the number three spot with $12.1million.
